Quick checks before you call
Most boiler call-outs come down to low pressure, a setting, a frozen condensate pipe or no gas credit, so check these first.
- Pressure: most combi boilers need about 1 to 1.5 bar on the gauge when cold. If it's below 1, it may need topping up using the filling loop (check your boiler manual).
- Power and settings: check the boiler has power, the timer or thermostat is calling for heat, and that a recent power cut hasn't reset the clock.
- Fault code: write down any code on the display. It helps the engineer.
- Frozen condensate pipe: in freezing weather, check the plastic pipe running outside.
- Prepayment meter: check you have gas credit.
Radiators not heating
Cold radiators are usually air in the system, a stuck valve or a sludged-up radiator, and only some of that is a DIY job.
- Cold at the top: bleed it with a radiator key, then re-check the boiler pressure.
- Cold at the bottom or in the middle: often sludge; a plumber may suggest a flush.
- One radiator stone cold: check the valve is open; the pin under a thermostatic head can stick.
Gas Safe matters
Anyone working on a gas boiler must by law be on the Gas Safe Register. Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card; you can check it at gassaferegister.co.uk. If you smell gas, leave the property and call 0800 111 999.

Questions people ask
- Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?
- Usually a small leak in the system, a faulty pressure relief valve or an expansion vessel that needs recharging. Topping up gets you going, but if it keeps dropping, it needs a Gas Safe engineer.
- Is no hot water an emergency?
- It can be, especially if there are children, elderly or vulnerable people in the house, or in cold weather. Call and a plumber will talk you through it.
- How do I check a boiler engineer is Gas Safe registered?
- Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card when they arrive. It shows their photo, licence number and the types of gas work they are qualified for. You can also check them at gassaferegister.co.uk.
