Common toilet problems
Most toilet emergencies are a blockage, a cistern that won't stop running or a leak at the base, and each has a simple first step.
- Blocked: stop flushing. Try a cup plunger with a few firm pushes. If the water won't go down, or other drains are slow too, the blockage is probably further down the drain.
- Constantly running: usually a worn flush valve washer or a faulty fill valve. Turn the isolation valve on the pipe to the cistern (a slot you turn with a flat screwdriver) to stop the water while you wait.
- Leaking at the base: could be a failed seal or a cracked pan. Turn off the isolation valve and avoid using it.
- Won't flush: often a broken flush mechanism or button, a quick fix for a plumber.

Questions people ask
- How do I stop a toilet that keeps running?
- Turn off the isolation valve on the pipe feeding the cistern, usually a small screw-slot valve. That stops the water without turning off the whole house.
- What if my only toilet is blocked?
- That counts as urgent. Call and a plumber will call you back to arrange a visit.
- Can I use drain unblocker in a toilet?
- It's best avoided. Strong chemicals rarely shift wipes or solid blockages and can damage seals and pipes, as well as being dangerous for the plumber who comes next.
