The short answer
Most UK cost guides put an emergency plumber's call-out fee at about £100 to £120, with out-of-hours labour at roughly £75 to £150 an hour and parts on top. Prices in and around London tend to sit at the higher end.
Figures checked on 26 October 2026 from the Checkatrade, MyBuilder and Rated People cost guides linked below. They are UK-wide ballpark ranges, not prices for Bromley specifically. Every plumber sets their own rates, so prices vary and none of this is a quote.
Call-out fees and hourly rates
Expect a call-out fee for an emergency or out-of-hours visit, then labour by the hour, then parts.
| Job or charge | Typical range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency call-out fee | £100–£120 | Checkatrade (average £110), Oct 2026 |
| Emergency call-out fee | £50–£150 | MyBuilder, Aug 2026 |
| Emergency labour, per hour | £75–£150 | Checkatrade, Oct 2026 |
| Emergency plumbing, per hour | £50–£180 | Rated People, checked 26 October 2026 |
| Standard daytime labour, per hour | £40–£60 | Checkatrade, Oct 2026 |
Checkatrade also notes that some plumbers charge a minimum of one hour for emergency work, so ask about that before they set off.
Out-of-hours: how much more?
Nights, weekends and bank holidays cost more: Checkatrade says emergency plumbers can charge up to twice their normal hourly rate, plus a call-out fee.
MyBuilder's guide breaks call-out fees down by time: about £80–£120 on weekday daytimes, £100–£140 late at night, £120–£150 at weekends and £130–£180 on holidays (MyBuilder, Aug 2026). If the problem can safely wait until morning, ask whether a daytime visit would be cheaper.
Typical costs by problem
The job itself matters more than anything else; a simple blocked toilet costs far less than a burst pipe behind a wall.
| Job or charge | Typical range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Burst pipe repair | £150–£600 | MyBuilder, Aug 2026 |
| Simple broken pipe repair (short uPVC section) | about £100 | Checkatrade, Oct 2026 |
| Blocked drain cleared by rodding | about £175 | Checkatrade, Oct 2026 |
| Drain rodding / drain jetting | £75–£150 / £100–£250 | MyBuilder, Aug 2026 |
| CCTV drain survey (basic) | £90–£300 | MyBuilder, Aug 2026 |
| Blocked or overflowing toilet | about £100 | Checkatrade, Oct 2026 |
| Hidden leak detection | £80–£1,600 | Checkatrade, May 2026 |
| Emergency boiler repair | £225–£675 | Checkatrade (average £450), Oct 2026 |
| Boiler lost pressure (re-pressurised) | about £182 | Checkatrade, Oct 2026 |
| Gas Safe engineer, per hour | £50–£80 | Checkatrade, Oct 2026 |
Leak detection has the widest range because the method changes the price: a quick check of an accessible pipe is at the low end, while thermal imaging, acoustic or tracer-gas searches cost more. Water damage repairs after a burst are extra and can cost far more than the plumbing itself.
Why prices vary in Bromley and South East London
The guides above are national, and Checkatrade notes that prices tend to be higher in cities.
- Distance: the further the plumber travels, the more the call-out can be.
- Time of day: evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays cost more.
- Access: a pipe under floorboards or behind tiles takes longer than one under the sink.
- Parts: parts are charged on top, and special parts may mean a second visit.
- Parking and travel: Checkatrade lists these among the extras some plumbers add.
What to ask before work starts
Ask for the call-out fee, the hourly rate, any minimum charge and whether VAT is included before the plumber starts.
- Is there a call-out fee, and what does it cover?
- What is the hourly rate, is there a minimum charge, and how is time billed after the first hour?
- Are parts included, and roughly what will they cost?
- Does the price include VAT? A VAT-registered plumber adds VAT at 20%.
- For boiler or gas work: are you on the Gas Safe Register? (Ask to see the ID card.)
Ways to keep the bill down
Stopping the water quickly and checking who is responsible for the pipe can save more than shopping around.
- Turn off the stopcock straight away. Less water damage means a smaller bill afterwards.
- Check whether the drain is shared. If the blockage is in a drain serving more than one property, or in the public sewer, the sewerage company (Thames Water for most of our area) normally clears it for free.
- Check your home insurance. Many policies include escape-of-water and trace-and-access cover. Keep photos and the plumber's invoice.
- Try the simple boiler checks first: pressure, power and settings, and a frozen condensate pipe in cold weather.

Questions people ask
- How much is an emergency plumber call-out in Bromley?
- UK cost guides put an emergency call-out at about £100 to £120 (Checkatrade, October 2026), and MyBuilder gives a wider £50 to £150. None of them price Bromley separately, and prices tend to be higher in cities, so expect the upper end. The plumber who calls you back will confirm their rate before any work starts.
- Do plumbers charge more at night and at weekends?
- Usually, yes. Checkatrade says emergency plumbers can charge up to twice their normal hourly rate plus a call-out fee. MyBuilder puts call-out fees at about £100 to £140 late at night and £120 to £150 at weekends, against £80 to £120 on weekday daytimes.
- How much does it cost to fix a burst pipe?
- MyBuilder puts burst pipe repairs at £150 to £600: about £150 to £300 for a small leak on an accessible pipe, and more for a major burst. Repairing water damage afterwards is extra.
- How much does it cost to unblock a drain?
- Checkatrade gives about £175 for clearing a blocked drain by rodding. MyBuilder puts rodding at £75 to £150 and jetting at £100 to £250, with emergency call-outs of £100 to £180.
- Who pays to clear a shared or public drain?
- If the blockage is in a drain shared with neighbours or in the public sewer, the sewerage company (Thames Water for most of our area) normally clears it for free. A pipe that only serves your home is usually your responsibility.
- Is VAT included in these prices?
- Not always. A VAT-registered plumber adds VAT at 20%, and some guides quote prices before VAT, so ask whether the price you are given includes it.
- Are these prices a quote?
- No. They are published UK averages, checked on 26 October 2026, to help you know what to expect. Each plumber sets their own prices and will give you a price or call-out rate before any work starts.
